Torres Becomes World’s Most Admired Wine Brand

Mar 19: After being a close contender for the top spot as World’s Most admired Brand, the Spanish family-owned brand Torres has snatched the title from last year’s winner Casillero del Diablo now pushed down to the second spot in the annual poll conducted by Drinks International amongst 200 wine professionals.

The Chilean giant Concha y Toro, Casillero del Diablo remained a hot contender, but dropped one place to vacate the Top Spot. Despite Lafite being the most popular Brand in China, the first growth Chateau Latour is in the Third Spot with the Super Tuscan Tignanello from Antinori making a huge jump of 28 spots to reach the fourth position

The fifth and sixth berths are occupied by Australian brand Penfolds and Sauternes legend Château d’Yquem, while the remaining spots in the Top Ten are held by Château Margaux, Cloudy Bay, Guigal and Vega Sicilia.

Estates in the 1855 classification are well represented in the list with all five first growths appearing in the Top 40. Perhaps its decision to move out of the annual En Primeur system has helped Chateau Latour to be the first among the 5 classified growths to be in the pecking order of Most admired wines.

More than 200 wine professionals including Masters of Wine, consultants, wine writers, retailers, educators, buyers and analysts around the world participated in the voting process. The criteria for the 2014 survey, published in the March edition of Drinks International included, "the wine should be of consistently improving quality" and "it should have a strong appeal to a wide demographic."

Commenting on this year’s Poll the Supplement editor of Drinks International, Holly Motion said: “This year Drinks International’s World’s Most Admired Wine Brands report has undergone a metamorphosis. The voting is more robust, the number of academy members has quadrupled, the survey has expanded and the results are telling. There are some surprise newcomers – and some even more surprising absentees.”

“Last year’s winner, Concha y Toro, has been knocked off the top spot by Torres, which garnered more than 15% of the total votes cast. Despite losing the top spot, Concha y Toro’s global brand, Casillero del Diablo, secured the second top spot with its eco-friendly sister Chilean brand, Cono Sur, taking the 16thslot, two up on last year’s poll."

Torres wines are imported by Prestige Wines and Spirits Pvt Ltd- a JV in which Torres owns a significant share to make it a 50% (non-Indian partners) and 50% (Indian shares owned by Gautam Thapar). Concha y Toro wines are imported by Global Duty Free. Tignanello (Antinori) is distributed exclusively by Berkmann Cellars India, Mumbai while Penfolds is imported by Mohan Bros. Guigal and Vega Sicilia are imported by Brindco Sales. Cloudy Bay is imported by Moet Hennessey India. The Classified Growths are imported through négociants and are all available in India despite their high prices.
