The Indage Board had taken a decision to the effect and it applied for the name change on November 04, 2008. The order allowing the name change was received on November 21.
Coincidentally, the company came into existence in early 80s with the introduction of Marquise de Pompadour (MDP) 'Champagne' which put India on the world wine map with a variant of the same bubbly labelled as 'Omar Khayyam' and exported to several countries.
The name change reflects the pressure possibly being applied by Comité Interprofessionnel du Vin de Champagne (CIVC), the official union of champagne producers which spends millions of dollars fighting the IPR rights globally and challenging the use of the word either for the wine, brand, process, company name or in any description of the product unless it is produced under their tutelage following their laws and guidelines.
