Forte da Cruz, the 17th century fortress built by the Portuguese Monarchy in Cascais right on the ocean, about 25 minutes away from Lisbon airport, was refurbished a century ago with a distinct Tuscan style. That perfectly matched the beach and the view of the Atlantic Ocean directly in front. It was used as a Summer House, for the Portuguese Royal Court but today it has become a luxury wedding destination venue in Portugal.
Come June 7 and the historic fort will become an important venue for MUST- Fermenting Ideas: the International Wine Summit being held on June 7-9 in Cascais, the closest beach town of Lisbon, that has become a luxury destination for wealthy and affluent tourists from around the world.
It is the brain child of two of the best known wine journalists and experts from Portugal, Rui Falcão and Paulo Salvador, who are well aware of the significance and the beauty of the surroundings in Cascais. ‘Wine Sunset by the Sea’, the social programme for the evening will see the delegates at the old fortress- Forte da Cruz.
Sharing of ideas
While several other affluent visitors on holidays will be relaxing, the participating audience of industry professionals who are top experts in wine and most engaging speakers in the wine sector will be giving talks on the future of the business to around 500 industry professionals, making it a unique conference. According to the organisers, there will be relevant seminars and discussions regarding:
viticulture (organics, global warming, grape varieties)
vinification (natural wines)
élevage (fermentation, aging and bottling of wine) and different methods
marketing and wine tourism (the consumer of the future, qualifications for sommeliers)
and many other aspects of the wine will be discussed for the first time.
An interesting and important aspect of the Conference is that it would be highly international in looks with 80% of the participating delegates being from overseas. Though the historic venue is Portuguese, the flavour will be distinctly international.
All seminars will be in English.
Sunset Tastings at the Fort will help the delegates unwind and exchange information. They will also have networking opportunities with other participants as well as tasting the wine industry offering with the rear guard striving to bring out the best wines from Portugal to taste.
