Aher was already on the Board last year and perhaps his name was omitted due to oversight while Desai has been invited for the first time. Both have been appointed as permanent invitees thus joining the illustrious industrialist from Delhi-Dhruv Sahni, a very knowledgeable connoisseur of Bordeaux First Growths, Burgundy Grand Crus and other top quality imported wines.
Desai would like to see the growth of wine industry through better inputs in the viticulture segment and by creating awareness about wines through wine festivals & similar activities. He would also like to push the onerous task of getting the wine industry better organised & competitive by getting the whole industry regulated.
His winery Vinsura had planned to sell as many as 100,000 cases last year but fell short of the targets due to the continuing recession when he had taken over as the CMD. With a sale of around 30-35,000 cases under the belt, the winery is now poised to be on the fast track.
Vinsura was founded by 4 local land-owning farmers switching to wine grapes in 2001 and starting the winery project-the first entrepreneurial venture after the liberalized excise policy was announced by Maharashtra in 2001. Despite the initial excitement and Sankalp (determination) to make it big and compete directly with Sula with the help of the winemaker that had crossed over from Sula, the project floundered mid-course due to marketing, management and financial constraints.
With Nitin’s technical background-he is a marine engineer with varied interests and experience in the industry and has put professional management in the company; the results should soon be visible to the industry and consumers. Vinsura hopes to notch the third place behind Sula and Grover in the still wine sector.
Perhaps Mr. Desai’s biggest triumph was his venturing into Nasik’s local wine industry when in 2008, he became a shareholder in Vinsura Vineyards located in Niphad near Nashik. He later increased his stakes to a majority and took over as the CMD of the company in 2010, according to the company PR.
Perhaps, the bigger triumph was to get inducted into the Board. The initial list of IGPB released on July 29 and published by delWine didn’t have his name in the list. Apparently the Board is becoming more dynamic in its second real year of operation. Hopefully with the expanded Board, it will be able to push the formation of wine laws to which Nitin is committed and hopefully other members would be as keen.
For the next expansion announcement, please follow these columns, as usual.
