Californian winery Ridge Vineyards climbed four places to reach the third spot. Earlier, Concha y Toro held the top spot for three years in succession in 2011-13 when it pipped Torres and Penfold to the Post. In 6 years it is the first time that a winery outside of Spain or Chile has managed to win the coveted title.
Obviously Peter Gago, chief winemaker of Penfolds, whose name is synonymous with Grange is thrilled. "After 172 years in the wine business, we’re still hungry, still excited and still eager to make better wine and champion new followers,” he is reported to have exclaimed. Penfolds had been placed 3rd in 2015, 4th in 2014 and 5th in 2013.
The leading brand of South Australia, Penfolds heads a very different list this time with twenty-one brands slipping down the ranks this year with 14 brands climbing up the list. Errazuriz has made it to the 7th position. Tio Pepe is at 10th and Graham’s Port at 14th. Gramona (Spanish Cava imported by the Wine Park) enters for the first time at the 26th spot whereas Nederburg (imported in India by Aspri) makes it to the 49th spot in the Top 50 list.
The awards are decided by a panel of over 200 wine experts, MWs, sommeliers, wine buyers, educators and journalists. The World’s Most Admired Wine Brands editor, Holly Motion, says: “You cannot buy your way into the list or rely on marketing spend to secure a place. Some of the biggest ‘brands’ do not appear. Five million-case brands are trounced by brands that sell 100th of that. Old and New World wines sit in an order many would not expect or necessarily agree with.
