Dec 03: ProWein, world’s leading and most relevant trade fair for wines and spirits, that was planned to be held from 19 to 23 March 2021 in Düsseldorf has been cancelled with the next one to be organised on 27-29 March, 2022, on account of the Covid-19 related restrictions, writes Subhash Arora
According to a Press Release today by Messe Düsseldorf, organisers of the much awaited ProWein, the next edition of Prowein which was already cancelled in 2020 and postponed to 2021, has been further postponed by a year. The next edition is slated to be held on 27-29 March 2022, giving a gap of unprecedented 2 years.
The current developments in Covid-19 infections, the travel situation and legal framework have led Messe Düsseldorf to re-assess the situation. The decision taken by the federal and state governments on 25 November 2020, according to which the holding of trade fairs continues to be prohibited, further developments are unforeseeable, says the PR.

“We have not taken this decision lightly – instead we have very carefully weighed the arguments for and against a trade fair during these dynamic pandemic times in close and in-depth consultation with our partners and exhibitors. The decisive factor for us was the interest of our exhibitors and visitors,” explains Erhard Wienkamp, Managing Director of Messe Düsseldorf GmbH.
In this context the timing of the decision played a crucial role: “Exhibitors can now focus on the next ProWein dates and gear their preparations to them. With this move we are ensuring the planning security so indispensable to successful business. In line with this long-term strategy the 2022 ProWein dates have already been scheduled for 27 to 29 March 2022, he adds.
The decision might be disappointing for wine importers and producers in India who look forward to the visit and plan their imports and taste new vintages and addition to new portfolios but would nevertheless appreciate the safety factor and travel restrictions that are expected to continue in 2021 despite the vaccines promised.

The next ProWine Asia will also be renamed as ProWine Hong Kong, and will be staged from 18 to 21 May 2021. For the uninitiated, Messe Düsseldorf GmbH is the owner and organiser of all the Prowein shows in the world. Since wine is known as wein in German language, the annual show in Düsseldorf has been called ProWein since the beginning. In the other parts of the world, they decided to change it to ProWine for obvious reasons. For instance, if they were to organise it in Italy one day, it would be ProVino.
