Là Là Là Là- ALDI Là Pinot Grigio bags top prize at Melbourne International Wine Show
I remember the Lyrics from ALDILA-the 60- year old song from the film ‘Rome Adventure’. Though the original version was in Italian (old timers would remember Connie Francis mesmerising the audience with the Italian version), but it translated to the English version something like:
I didn’t believe it was possible,
that you could say these words:
Beyond the most valuable thing, there you are.
Beyond the most ambitious dream, there you are.
And of course Aldi in Singapore lingo would perhaps be addressed as Aldi La (or Aldi Lah!).

The Supermarket chain Aldi has revived those memories by winning the top prize at the Melbourne International Wine Show for its A$4.99 (Appx Rs. 270) South Point Estate Pinot Grigio 2022 which took the Double Gold Award at this Prestigious event where over 1000 wines had participated from 8 countries, beating hundreds of far more expensive wines to take home to coveted prize.

There were five other ALDI wines too- all under A$10 – which took Gold medals at the competition across the sparkling, white, rose and red wine categories. They are:
- Gold: Corte Carista Prosecco DOC – A$9.99
- Gold: South Point Estate Moscato 2022 – A$4.69
- Gold: Loire Valley Sauvignon Blanc 2020 – A$9.99
- Gold): Loire Valley Cabernet Franc Rose 2020 – A$8.49
- Gold: The Pond Cabernet Sauvignon 2020 – A$6.99
1 A$ = US$ 0.64 (Multiply A$ by 0.64 to get a US Dollar- slightly less than 2/3rd)
This is not the first time Aldi has won the Top Honours. At least on one earlier occasion its One Road South Australian Heathcote Shiraz 2015 costing A$ 6.99 had won Wine of the Year Award in the Best Value Shiraz category at the competition in 2017. No wonder Australia, especially the supermarket chain of Aldi , is known to sell some of the best quaffs.

The judging for this Competition is conducted by panels of four or more qualified trade buyers. They are a mix of restaurateurs, sommeliers, retail spirits buyers, distributors and importers. The organisers try to form each judging panel with a mix of different disciplines so multiple viewpoints are considered in the evaluation of the wines and spirits. The medals are awarded on a merit basis by a majority vote. The judges are instructed to grant no medals when they feel that they would not import, distribute, buy or sell wines in the relevant product and price category (about 50 categories).
