Study: Red Wine in Moderation can be good for Libido
‘Polyphenols found in red wine bring benefits including better blood flow, stimulation of sex organs and increased testosterone. The study said: “The antioxidant properties of polyphenols found in red wine appear to be beneficial for the male reproductive system, suggesting a positive correlation between red wine consumption and testosterone serum levels.” The study also suggested that red wine could help boost male fertility.
Regarding the challenges of maintaining erection, the antioxidant properties of polyphenols in red wine can contribute to enhanced blood vessel health. This, in turn, facilitates sustaining the erection by increased blood flow to the penis. Furthermore, red wine’s potential to elevate testosterone levels, the primary driver of sexual desire and male fertility, is also suggested by the researchers.
These compounds, predominantly flavonoids, are not only present in red wine but also in various plant-based foods such as fruits, vegetables, herbs, spices, tea, and dark chocolate but their impact was not a part of this Study.
The study also looked at the impact of red wine on women and discovered those who drank red wine in moderation had more sexual desire than those who drank one glass or less, or were teetotalers. Women consuming moderate red wine showed higher scores for sexual desire and lubrication with overall improvement in sexual function compared to teetotaler women or occasional drinkers consuming less than one glass per day of wine or other alcoholic beverages.
One study they reviewed looked at the effects of red wine on sexual desire. In a group of almost 800 women in Italy, those who drank red wine in moderation reported better libido than those who drank less than a glass of wine, or any other alcoholic drink, each day.
Considering that age usually correlates inversely with sexual function, these findings appear to be interesting, as the women in group one (moderate drinkers) were older than in groups two (one glass a day) and three (teetotalers). Authors ascribe these findings to the synergistic effect of both polyphenols and alcohol content in red wine.
The study also looked at whether other alcoholic beverages like beer would have a similar effect but concluded that red wine had a bigger impact. It also concluded that high levels of alcohol intake were detrimental to sexual health an overall health
The antioxidant properties found in red wine can improve vascular health, which gives the blood flow to the penis a boost and helps to maintain an erection. The authors conclude that the antioxidant properties of polyphenols present in red wine appear to be beneficial for the reproductive system. Though red wine has a positive impact on the heart, it can increase blood flow to other parts of the body as well.
Polyphenols have a role to play when it comes to reducing oxidation in the body, which creates unstable chemicals that destroy cells. Polyphenols act as antioxidants, which can help to prevent heart disease and certain types of cancers.
In addition, it is believed that testosterone, a driver of libido, can be boosted by red wine. The drink can also improve male fertility.
This latest review of research adds to previous studies into how alcohol consumption affects sexual health. For instance, a study published in 2016 followed 50,000 healthy, middle-aged men for a period of 40 years. The findings revealed that the men who consumed a glass of red wine on a regular basis, along with some citrus fruits and berries, were about 10% less likely to have erectile dysfunction.
This latest Research reported in the Journal of Clinical Research follows the advice earlier this year from World Health Organization (WHO) that no amount of alcohol is safe, while the Dietary Guidelines for Americans reports that daily drinking should be limited to two drinks or less for men and one or less for women to keep the negative impacts at bay.
As has become a standard practice, the researchers warn that further Studies need to be carried out to determine the specific effects of polyphenols on sexual functionality

We advise our readers to take the advice of their doctor but has been recommending up to two glasses of red wine for men and up to one glass a day for women, about 5 days a week to have a good balance- editor
