I would be happy to share my resume and other necessary details to see if any suitable roles exist. Thanks a lot! |

Your best option is to go for WSET courses. They are in 4 levels-1,2 and 3. 3 is a nice certification and 4 which is diploma is a tough nut to crack and can surely make a taster out of you. But these courses are expensive. A few people are conducting these courses. Level 4 is usually done in London or Hong Kong though infrequently an opportunity does arrive in India. But your priority at this point should be Level 2 and then 3. Arora |

Hello, I would like to pursue a career as a wine taster in India however, I don’t hold a degree in Hotel Management or similar. I used to be in Actuary but quit sometime back. Also have no experience in the F&B industry. Could you please guide me as to what are my options if I’d like to take this up seriously as a profession. A bachelors in hotel Management would be difficult at this stage as I am 31 and I'd like to start hands on parallel-y as well, so if you know of alternatives to the degree please let me know, because I am quite keen on it and like to start ASAP. Would really appreciate any guidance. Thank you Megha Delhi |

You need to join a hotel management institute and focus on wine and wine tasting. first. Then try working at a place where wine is being served.
This can be followed by training in the hotel you work at and work for WSET. This is one stream possible.

Though wine has many advantages for health, the alcohol in it can be harmful- especially in the formative years of chilren. It is not advisable to feed wine to the child under 16 years. The legal age varies from 18-25. Feed him good diet like fruits, vegetables and nourishing foods. A little wine with food if you drink wine after 16 or 18 is ok- not before. S Arora |

I am afraid there is no officially correct figure on that.
There are actually less than 50, I feel. Only around 30 are active. The problem is also because some of them have become satellite wineries for the bigger ones. Many are making very small quantities of low end wines.
I must caution though that about 1 million cases (40% of totally consumed) are 'PORT" wines- these are cheap fortified wines- its a cottage indusctry adn no one I think keeps track of them, So the situation is more confusing than you can imagine. But the Top Three produce around around 50% and wait! Here too, undisclosed wine is the low ended 'Port' wine!!

I am updating some of my entries (I cover the all the producing countries in Asia) and need to update on statistics for India. In 2012 the Indian Grape Processing Board had put the number of wineries at 70, though we all know some have abandoned their brands are are selling heir wine or their grapes to larger wineries.. I would be very grateful if you could tell me the official number (if there is such a thing) now. Many thanks Denis Gastin |

Hi Anthony,
Sonal has nothing to do with this website or delWine/Indian Wine Academy though we are together in a couple of other projects.
Incidentally, I have tried at least 2 wines from BC- Kalala was one of them,
I also know that Okanagans believe their wines are superior to Niagara.
I am not sure as I have not tasted them side by side blind.
But they are delicious.

Too complex to answer just like that. In prinicple, anyone can import. You need to have a bonded warehouse or an arrangement, For selling you need a license or appoint a distributor who has one. Most important-you need to have marketing strength to sell the product. |

In theory, its possible, but in practice, not advisable. You can import as samples maybe 12 bottles at a time. But you may have to pay customs duty most, if not at all, times. Courier charges are extra. So it becomes expensive. You can import larger number by sea but the taxes and registration are again very high. It is best to check out the Retail and get some discounts for buying a case at a time. In most places discounts are possible, except Delhi. Subhash Arora |

Can I buy direct from wineries in Australia? This is for personal consumption and hence small quantities, a couple of cases at a time. Who best to contact in India for Australian wines? Thank you. |

Two bottles are actually allowed. I think I will file an RTI to find the information. They are not supposed to ask for the bill. I guess next time you should tell him quietly to confiscate it and give you a receipt. I know by air if you travel you can carry 5 liters. When you travel by road you are allowed 1 liter out-of-state. Dear Mr. Arora While traveling by train at Delhi railway stations, if I carry, a sealed bottle or two of whisky, police man at X-ray machine overtime bothers. After some heated arguments he allows to carry those sealed and with bill bottles on board. 1. Is there any official notice available for the law on transport of sealed whisky bottles for personal consumption, in Delhi / India. 2. Is there any copy available for railway rules and regulation for carrying two bottles/ person on board. Regards Vikas |

Although red wine is decidedly better from health standpoint but the difference between red and white has not been found to be so vast that I recommend it is best to drink what you like-men or women. 30 mL is like taking a medicine and is neither here nor there-unless you are tasting wine. I won't recommend it. I would suggest 125 mL (6 glasses to a standard botlle) to 150 mL (5 glasses to a normal bottle) of wine of choice for the ladies-preferably red and preferably with food. It should enhance the food experience and if it helps remaining healthy, why not! BTW, wine is no substitute for daily exercise. Subhash Arora |

Thanks for the compliments Harpreet. But why do you want to set up in Rajasthan? Although if you do the proper analysis of soil and climate, you might have a goldmine in hand. License is issued by State Excise Department. I suggest you contact them in Jaipur. Even if you don't get approval initially, you will eventually get it for wine. But first go and visit several wineries, taste their wines and see what you are getting into. Check out the market in Rajasthan. Try to get excise free as in Maharashtra and Karnataka. Only then proceed. Good luck. Subhash Arora |

Sending samples of wine is quite feasible. One may or may not have to pay duty on them. I have received samples of 12 bottles in my house and at times I have had to pay duty on 2!! Depends on the whims of the customs guys. But I have found that for genuine samples they are pretty decent. Selling is of course, another ball game altogether. I hope you get some positive answers from some of our readers though I won't be too optimistic. Subhash Arora |

Hello Wine guru aka Mr.Subash, Greetings!! I am planning to bring a new brand of wine in India. While I have already have the brochures and literature of the company mailed to me in parcel, how could I go about having them send me sample bottles. They are ready to send but I just want to check if there are any laws pertaining the same. I assume, I simply can't just have them send me the samples as it is alcohol. Also, besides the plans that are in my mind, what ideas would you suggest to go about marketing this brand across India? I can be reached at daysachin@gmail.com If anyone can contribute to this topic, feel free to do so. If you need my phone number, please email me and i'll send it on there. Thank you! -sachinn |

Your friends are right. What is important is the volume of alcohol going into your system. For instance if there is 42% alcohol in a 150-mL glass filled with whisky that has 1 part whisky and 2 parts water/ice, it will have the same alcohol as 150mLglass of wine with 14% alcohol. Although wine has natural alcohol and has many benefits, the negative effects would be same-especially when you drink more than 2 glasses. Wine has additionally anti oxidants though. Arora |

There is no study done on hair growth that I know of but yes-red wine is definitely good for the skin. You may use wine instead of water to make any kind of face pack or use it by itself. If you have access to the must after fermentation-that is grapes left after crushing-that is even better. Today, cosmetic companies are doing it already in Italy and France at least. Subhash Arora |

Fruit wines like peach are meant to be drunk young. They don't age and get better like many grape wines. They should be consumed within a year. I think your wine would still be ok-if you stored it properly. I suggest you drink it up. Once it is opened, the bottles should best be finished the same night but if you quickly seal it back and put in the fridge, it would be ok for the next couple of nights. Cheers. Subhash Arora |

Hi Hari,
Canada makes perhaps the best ice wine- real amrit, as I like to say. Unfortunately, in India, dessert wines have not caught on. I don’t see good future in the short term but with perseverance, a good niche market is possible. High cost due to taxes is another inhibitor. In a perfect world, a glass of icewine at the end of a meal in a hotel/ restaurant would be divine. Unfortunately, it costs an arm and a leg with their present pricing policies. Subhash Arora

I am afraid there are no recognised wine correspondence courses that will further your wine career. At the end, it is wine tastings that are more important and that is not possible through correspondence. There is plety of material available on the Net- including tests etc. Please visit as often and to as many reputed websites as possible. In fact, even indianwineacademy.com has more useful and relevant information than a correspondence course would. Read as much or as little as you can, followed by tastings. If you want to do a course, wait till you can attend a structured course.

There would be many who would put you on total abstinence. Denmark has done several studies and their national diet prescribes 4 glasses (125 mL each) a week max, but no more than one ever night. I have talked to many women in iIaly. They usually take 2 glasses a week-but not on the same evening. I'd say 2- 4 glasses a week of red wine is fine, Try to drink wines with lower alcohol- up to 12.5 or 13%

Dear Arun,
The key is getting the permission from the excise department as the policies are very strict in Chennai. I suggest you try for Indian wines only in the first attempt. You will need some running around but at the end if you are successful, the rewards would of sweet success would be memorable.
Please give it all you have- Once you have this in place I can try to tell some pf the producers to extend you as much support as possible. DelWine will certainly support you in your endeavour.

Dear Umesh and Beena,
Import duties are same throughout India and from anywhere in the world- 150% on the assessable value which is CIF +1%. Additionally there are Special duties of 4% which are refundable (not an easy job!). Then there is an educational cess of around 3%. Importers usually take 160% in their calculations. Then there are Octroi duty for Mumbai and Excise duties'
which is complicated and different for each state- many of which you will find in our website. To get in tabulated form you will need to pay unncecessarily to us.
Then there is 20% VAT on the total cost, including all overheads and margins. France gets no special treatment. Do not forget the license fee and label registration charges which are additional for each state. There are no duties for export of wines. Hotels and restaurants get the benefit of no import customs duty for 5% of the foreign exchange earnings in the previous years (not cash) but excise duties are payable at par with others. Arora |
